A hydro-pneumatic accumulator is a device that enables significant energy storage within hydraulic circuits in a compact form factor. Since liquids are virtually incompressible and therefore unsuitable as an energy storage medium, this objective is achieved by exploiting the high compressibility of gases.

In a vessel ranging in capacity from 0.5 to 3,000 litres without an elastic separator, high-pressure water can be stored at pressures up to 350 bar. The gas section may utilise nitrogen or air. The gas expands to occupy the entire internal volume of the accumulator body. When circuit pressure exceeds gas pre-charge pressure, gas compression occurs. As fluid pressure increases, gas volume is reduced with a corresponding increase in gas pressure, establishing equilibrium with the fluid pressure.
